The 2012 Fire: A "Heartbreaking" Loss
On March 11, 2012, a significant fire swept through the historic property. As reported by the Fredericksburg Patch, firefighters encountered "heavy fire conditions sweeping across the entire front porch area and extending into the structure." While the majority of the blaze was contained within 20 minutes, the sheer size of the building, which had been converted into apartments, meant firefighters spent hours battling hidden pockets of fire within walls and ceilings.

The owners, Earl and Peggy Kendall, along with their son-in-law, Shannon Stone, a home restorer, faced a "heartbreaking" loss. The fire caused extensive smoke damage on all floors, with the main floor bearing the brunt, and many of the historic custom windows were destroyed. Despite the devastation, Stone expressed a strong desire to restore the home to "as much of its original state as possible," a sentiment bolstered by an "amazing" outpouring of community support.

From Ashes to Elegance: The 2012 Rebuild
Following the fire, the owners embarked on an ambitious rebuild. This extensive renovation, often described as a "full remodel" in 2012, meticulously preserved the home's timeless charm while integrating modern comforts. So thorough was this restoration that some property records now list the "Year Built" as 2012, acknowledging the comprehensive nature of the post-fire reconstruction. The current residence seamlessly blends its historic character with contemporary amenities, a testament to its resilience and the dedication of those who brought it back to life.
