Official Contest Rules

VOID WHERE PROHIBITED OR RESTRICTED BY LAW. This is a skill‐based contest. No
part of selecting the winner will be based on chance. Many will enter, only one will win.


1. ACCEPTANCE OF RULES: By entering the “Write Your Way Home EssayContest (the
Contest”), you (the “Entrant”) hereby accept and agree to these official rules (the “Rules”) of the Contest. Any violation of the Rules may result in disqualification.

2. ELIGIBILITY: The Contest is open only to legal residents of the United States who are 18 years of age or older as of the date of entry (or have reached the age of majority in their state of residence, if higher than 18). Sponsor’s, Community Partners’, Word Slinger LLC, and Websites by Kyle’s employees, officers, directors, agents and representatives, and each of their respective parent corporations, subsidiaries, affiliates, sales representatives, or agents (all of the foregoing together with Sponsor, collectively, “Contest Entities”), and their immediate family members (spouse, parent, child, sibling and their respective spouses) and those living in the same household of each (whether legally related or not), are ineligible to enter or win the Contest. All applicable federal, provincial and local laws and regulations apply. Void where prohibited by law.

3. CONTEST PERIOD: The Contest begins at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time (“ET”) on August 15, 2025,
and ends at 8:00 p.m. ET on September 30, 2025 (the “Contest Entry Period”). All submissions must be uploaded and received no later than the end of the Contest Entry Period. The winner will be selected from entries properly submitted to the Contest.

4. CONTEST ENTRY INSTRUCTIONS: To enter, an Entrant must complete an original essay of
between 250 and 500 words on the topic “Why I Want to Live in Historical Fredericksburg,
Virginia” (each an “Essay” or “Submission”). Each Entrant must upload a Submission, as well as any requested information on the Contest entry form page, available here:
www.writeyourwayhome.net (the “Contest Entry Page”). Only electronic entry is allowed, and the entry must be submitted via the Contest Entry Page.

 

All Entrants must also pay a non-refundable entry fee of $200 (“Entry Fee”) with each entry as directed on the Contest Entry Page. Limit five (5) Submissions per person. Each Submission must include a unique essay. Submissions submitted after the first five received from any Entrant will be discarded. Submissions with over 500 words will be automatically disqualified.
 

The Submission must comply with the following submission guidelines:

  • Essay must address the official contest prompt and be written in English.

  • Essay must be the original work of the Entrant (and without the use of artificial intelligence).

  • Only single-author essays qualify (no co-authored entries).

  • Essay must not have been previously published or submitted in other competitions.

  • Entries must not infringe any copyright, trademark, or other intellectual property rights of any third party.

  • Entries must not contain offensive, defamatory, or unlawful content.


Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify any entry at its sole discretion for failure to comply with these requirements.


5. JUDGING & SELECTION OF CONTEST WINNER: After the end of the Contest Entry Period,
all eligible entries will be reviewed for completeness and eligibility by representatives of the
Sponsor (the “Panel of Judges”). The Panel of Judges will use the following criteria (the “Judging Criteria”) in evaluating each eligible entry:

 

  • Originality (20%)

  • Creativity (20%)

  • Relevance (15%)

  • Emotional Impact (20%)

  • Persuasiveness (15%)

  • Grammar (10%)


Sponsor reserves the right to use third party software to help confirm entries meet the eligibility criteria set forth in these Rules. Sponsor makes the final determination as to which Submissions are eligible to take part in this Contest and be considered for a prize.


Based on the Judging Criteria, the Entrant with the highest cumulative score will be deemed the potential winner. In the event of a tie, Sponsor and the Judging Panel may re-evaluate tied entries using Creativity & Originality as a tiebreaker. All decisions of the Panel of Judges and Sponsor are final and binding.


6. PRIZE & CONDITIONS: Subject to the conditions herein, one (1) winner will receive fee-simple title to the residential real property located at 1200 Prince Edward St. Fredericksburg, VA 22401 (the “Property” or “Prize”). The actual value of the Prize depends on market fluctuations. The Approximate Fair Market Value (“FMV”) may be determined by an independent appraisal paid for by Sponsor.

 

The Prize is awarded “as is,” with no warranties or representations (except as required by law). Real estate transfer taxes, deed recording charges, closing costs, current and future real estate taxes, title insurance, homeowner’s hazard and liability insurance, and all other taxes, costs, fees, and expenses related to the purchase, receipt, ownership and maintenance of the house shall be the responsibility of the Prize Winner commencing as of the date the Prize Winner accepts the Prize.


The Prize Winner must remit any required federal, state/provincial, or local taxes or withholdings (if applicable) associated with any real property interest receipt, ownership, and/or use, before taking title to the Property. ALL FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL TAXES IMPOSED ON THE ACCEPTANCE OF A PRIZE ARE SOLELY THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE WINNER. Transfer of the Property must be completed within thirty (30) days of the Prize Winner confirmation or as agreed by Sponsor but under no circumstances may the transfer be completed after sixty (60) days. The Prize Winner specifically waives any right to transfer of the Property after sixty (60) days.

 

Winning the Prize is contingent on fulfilling all the requirements set forth herein.

—PRIZE DESCRIPTION IF THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF SUBMISSIONS IS NOT RECEIVED —
If fewer than 15,000 Submissions are received by the end of the Contest Entry Period, the Prize will be substituted with a cash prize equal to 75% of all Entry Fees received by the end of the Contest Entry Period, minus reasonable expenses.


—DONATIONS IF CONTEST RECEIVES MORE THAN 15,000 SUBMISSIONS —


In the event that the contest receives more than 15,000 Submissions are received, all funds received from Entry Fees above the property value stated will be donated to the Community Partners in percentages to be determined by the Sponsor.
 
Unless as stated above, the Prize is non-transferable and not redeemable for cash.


7. PRIZE CLAIM CONDITIONS AND NOTIFICATION: Winning is subject to validation and
verification of eligibility and compliance with all terms and conditions set forth in the Official Rules. The potential winner will be notified by email or phone on or around November 14, 2025 (the “Winner Selection Date”), and must respond within seven (7) calendar days to confirm eligibility and acceptance. Failure to respond or comply will result in disqualification, and Sponsor may select an alternate winner.  Sponsor shall have no liability for a winner’s failure to receive notices due to winners’ spam, junk e-mail or other security settings or for winners’ provision of incorrect or otherwise non-functioning contact information.


The potential winner will be required to comply with the following, in order to be declared the Prize Winner:

 

  • Complete and sign an Affidavit of Eligibility, Liability/Publicity Release, and any required tax forms within seven (7) days of notification.

  • Satisfy all closing requirements for property transfer within 30 days, or as agreed to by the Sponsor.


In case of a dispute over the identity of an entrant, the authorized account holder of the email account associated with the entry used to enter will be deemed to be the entrant. “Authorized account holder” is defined as the person who is assigned to an email address by an Internet access provider, online service provider, or other organization that is responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted email address. The Prize Winner may be required to show proof of being the authorized account holder.


If the potential winner fails to comply with all conditions described in this Section 7 of the Rules (the “Prize Claim Conditions”) or is otherwise ineligible to claim the Prize, the Entrant with the next highest score will be selected as the new potential winner. This will repeat until an eligible potential winner is determined.


8. DISCLOSURES. Additional real estate disclosures may be required by applicable law, such as property condition reports or environmental disclosures. These will be provided to the Prize Winner prior to transfer, if required by applicable law.

9. RELEASE. By entering, each entrant agrees to defend, indemnify, release and hold harmless Contest Entities, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram from and against any and all losses, demands, damages (including without limitation direct, indirect, incidental, consequential or punitive damages), rights, claims, injuries, actions and liabilities (including, without limitation, any property loss, damage, personal injury or death caused to any person(s)) of any kind arising out of or related to (i) entrant's participation in the Contest, including access to and use of the Contest Entry Page, (ii) the delivery, acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize; or (iii) entrant's participation in any prize-related activities (including, without limitation, any property loss, damage, personal injury or death caused to any person(s)). The Prize Winner will be required to execute a declaration and release (“Release”) that confirms: (a) eligibility for the Contest and compliance with these Contest Rules; (b) acceptance of the prize as offered; and (c) release of the Sponsor and/or Contest Entities from any and all liability in connection with the Contest or the acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize. The executed Release must be returned within five (5) business days of the date indicated on the Release or the Prize Winner will be disqualified and the prize forfeited. If the Prize Winner fails to execute the release, the Entrant with the next highest score will be selected as provided in Section 7.

 

10. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. Without limiting the foregoing, the Contest Entities shall not be
responsible for: (a) any incomplete or inaccurate information that is caused by website users, or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Contest, or by any technical issue or human error which may occur in the transmission or processing of submissions in the Contest; (b) the theft, destruction, loss or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, entries; (c) damage to a user's/Entrant’s computer equipment (software or hardware) occasioned by participation or downloading of materials related to this Contest; (d) printing, distribution, programming, editorial, technical or production errors or omissions, and any other errors, omissions or malfunctions of any kind, whether human, mechanical, electronic or otherwise; or (e) any injury or damage to persons or property which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from Entrant’s participation
in the Contest or receipt, use, non-use or misuse of any prize. In any cause of action, the Contest Entities' liability will be limited to two hundred dollars (US $200.00), and in no event shall the Contest Entities be liable for attorneys' fees and/or experts' fees and costs. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, therefore such exclusions may not apply to you. ALL PRIZES ARE AWARDED “AS IS” AND CONTEST ENTITIES MAKE NO WARRANTIES, AND HEREBY DISCLAIM ANY AND ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, CONCERNING ANY PRIZE FURNISHED IN CONNECTION WITH THIS CONTEST.


11. PERSONAL INFORMATION / PUBLICITY: Sponsor and its authorized agents will collect, use, and disclose the personal information you provide when you enter the Contest for the sole purposes of administering the Contest and prize fulfillment.  By entering this Contest, you consent to such collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information.  The personal information will be hosted on servers in the United States, and the personal information you provide may therefore also be subject to the laws of the United States. The personal information collected through this Contest is subject to Sponsor’s Privacy Policy, located at https://www.writeyourwayhome.net/privacy-policy. By entering this Contest, you agree to the use of your personal information as described in the above Privacy Policy.

12. RULES/WINNER’S LIST REQUESTS: To obtain a copy of these Rules go to
https://www.writeyourwayhome.net/official-contest-rules. For the names of all prize winners,
available after the Winner Selection Date, send an e-mail to info@writeyourwayhome.net
ATTENTION: “Write Your Way Home” Contest. Request must be received no later than six months after the end of the Contest Entry Period.


13. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. All Sponsor’s intellectual property, including but not limited to
trade-marks, trade names, logos, designs, promotional materials, web pages, source code, drawings, illustrations, slogans and representations are owned by the Sponsors and/or their affiliates. All rights are reserved. Unauthorized copying or use of any copyrighted material or intellectual property without the express written consent of its owner is strictly prohibited. By entering the Contest, all Entrants agree to waive any and all rights under to the intellectual property of their Submission under state or federal law.


14. LANGUAGE DISCREPANCY. In the event of any discrepancy or inconsistency between the terms and conditions of the Rules and disclosures or other statements contained in any Contest-related materials, including but not limited to point of sale, television, print or online advertising, the terms and conditions of the Rules shall prevail, govern and control.


15. GENERAL RULES AND RIGHT TO TERMINATE/MODIFY: By entering or participating in
the Contest, participants agree to be bound by these Rules, the terms and conditions of the Website, and by the decisions of Sponsor, which are final and binding in all respects. All entries become the property of Sponsor and none will be returned or acknowledged. All entries and prize claims are subject to verification. Proof of entry submission does not constitute proof of receipt. The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of these Rules shall not affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision. If any provision of the Rules is determined to be invalid or otherwise unenforceable, then the Rules shall be construed in accordance with their terms as if the invalid or unenforceable provision was not contained therein. Sponsor's failure to enforce any term of these rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision. Any disputes that may arise hereunder shall be
governed in all respects by the laws of the United States without regard to the conflicts of laws principles of any jurisdiction. Sponsor also reserves the right at its sole discretion to disqualify the entry of any individual found to be (i) tampering or attempting to tamper with the entry process or the operation of the Contest or any website operated by the Contest Entities; (ii) violating these Rules or the terms of use, and/or general rules applicable to the Contest; or (iii) acting in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any other person. ANY ATTEMPT TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE THE WEBSITE OR ANY RELATED WEBSITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE CONTEST MAY BE A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS. SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, THE SPONSORS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO SEEK REMEDIES AND DAMAGES TO THE
FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO CRIMINAL
PROSECUTION. Sponsor reserves the right to correct any typographical, printing, computer
programming or operator errors. If, for any reason, the Contest is not capable of running as planned for reasons outside the control of the Sponsor which, in the sole opinion of Sponsor, may corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Contest (or portion thereof), Sponsor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest or these Rules (or portion thereof), at any time and without notice or obligation. In the event of such cancellation, termination, modification or suspension, Sponsor will select a winner from all eligible, non-suspect entries received prior to such action. If any court of competent jurisdiction deems the Contest impermissible by law, all entry fees collected will be returned to the Entrants less any costs associated with processing payments and returns. All disputes arising out of or related to this Contest shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, without regard to its conflict of laws rules. Any controversy or claim shall be resolved by binding arbitration in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

SPONSOR AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS: The sponsor of this contest is Edward & Lewis LLC located at 1200 Prince Edward St Fredericksburg, VA 22401 (the “Sponsor”). Additional beneficiaries include the Fredericksburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals located at 10819 Courthouse Rd., Fredericksburg, VA 22408 (the “SPCA”) and the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank (the “Food Bank”) (collectively, the “Community Partners”). Although the Contest may be promoted on social media, neither LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Meta nor any other social media platform, nor each of their respective parent corporations, subsidiaries, affiliates, sales representatives, or agents are sponsoring the contest.
